You don't have to display any information on the subfile control record, but you do need it. I've never tried not making use of SFLDSPCTL, but the documentation indicates it could be done - certainly you can use an option indicator on it.

No, at least I've never seen this but you can Display the control reocrd without the subfile. That's one way to deal with the no records found case or the case where you want the user to enter the first search value in the "Header" area before you display reocrds. Generally both display commands are off when the SBFCLR is on. Phil.

The documentation implies that SFLDSPCTL does not need to be on in order to display a subfile with one exception:
    • Note: SFLDSPCTL must be in effect when the subfile is displayed for an input operation to the subfile control record to be valid, even if there are no displayable fields in the subfile-control record format.
I assume, then, that if no input operation is done to the control record, the option does not need to be enabled. But like others, I've never tried it nor seen it done. Nor can I think of a good reason for it. Tom

I believe, you should be switching ON SFLDSPCTL indicator. SFLDSPCTL indicates the displaying the Control part of the Subfile. And, if you would like to display Subfile(With or With out Control Format Records), you must be using EXFMT with Control format Record format name. If your requirement is not to display the Fields available in Control format, you can have an indicator for Control format fields and switch it ON when you dont want Control format fields to be appear on Screen.
