Setting up a RAID 1 from an internal HD to an external HD
I have a 500GB internal HD on which I store all of my media and documents. I am interested in creating and maintaining an identical backup of the data stored on the internal drive on an external USB hard drive, while also having the internal HD being accessible other computers and devices on my home network. First off, is this even possible? Second, what type of hardware (recommended external HD, RAID controller, cables, etc) will I need to accomplish this? Thanks!

Software/Hardware used:
Windows 7 64-bit

Answer Wiki:
OK, so there's two questions. 1. Can I mirror from an internal drive to a USB drive? Technically yes. Performance will be horrible so I wouldn't ever recommend it. 2. Can I share the drive with computer computers? Sure, using Windows file sharing. Go pick up a cheap NAS from Best Buy, Costco, Fry's, etc. or use Windows Live Mesh to sync the folder onto all the computers you want to share it with.

Does your answer about being horribly slow even if external is the new much faster usb 3.0?

If USB 3.0 is fully supported by the system, then external RAID configurations are very feasible. — Tom
