If all you need is a file server and are willing to learn the ins and outs of linux then you can use older or new hardware and install something like the Mitel SME server.

this system is easy to setup and manage. It offers file services, ftp, ssl, ssh, email server, web server, print services and more. I have this system running to do email and a website for my father’s business and my sister’s business and have never had a problem
