Great question! So many companies just assume they need a server. This is not true. Windows 2003 Server can be used to
<ul>
Authenticate Users (Active Directory)
Setup Exchange (Email)
Setup SQL Server (Database)
Use as a file server
Host a web site
Host a FTP site
Have a central repository for user profiles.
</ul>
Now if you don't need these functions or you outsource them you can have a serverless environment. If you only need a file server you can use older versions of windows server OR even older hardware. JUST BUY NEW DRIVES!

If you live outside the United States, by submitting your email address you consent to having your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
the first place to start is asking your company what they need, not starting at what does this do to see if you need it. If all you need is a file server and are willing to learn the ins and outs of linux then you can use older or new hardware and install something like the Mitel SME server.
this system is easy to setup and manage. It offers file services, ftp, ssl, ssh, email server, web server, print services and more. I have this system running to do email and a website for my father’s business and my sister’s business and have never had a problem
