Windows Server 2008 has native Server Backup which is not compatible with backup created by NTBackup. Also, Server Backup is by volume and does not provide file level backup like NTBackup did. This means that the entire volume gets backed up. As an example, if you have a volume that is 300 GB in size with only 20 GB of data, your storage requirement for your backup is 1.5 times the 300 GB. Server Backup does not support backing up to tape.

Great answer — very informative, thanks. Seems that NTBackup has quite a few advantages over the native Server Backup tool. It seems like the Server Backup methodology is wasteful (space and usability) — are there any particular benefits to it that you didn’t mention here?
