Update: Well, out of all the folks I messaged here with this question, only two replied. Thank you to those two for taking the time and offering knowledgeable suggestions.

I would like to share my experince with using the Passwrod Reminder PRO tool from http://www.sysoptools.com - It has been working FANTASTIC!! This is FAR BETTER than any scripts I have used or written, and it was so simple to set up we went from testing to live in a week. This app is so simple, but so powerful. If you are a Windows and / or Exchange admin looking for a way to easily alert your users know without fail when their password will expire, check this utility out. It even comes with a full reporting console that let's you see status of all your user accounts. The password expiration reminder emails are professional looking and cusomizable. Very nicely done.
BTW we're running a native 2003 domain w/ Exchange 2003 SP2. fwiw- hope it helps.
