Send a program completion message to a user

A user call an update program - which will complete in a nanosecons as it reads 1 record and updates it. How Can I send a message to the user from the pgm giving completion data? Program could be CL or RPG3/4

You can send messages from a programm with the CMD SNDPGMMSG. You can define if you want to sent to the display (*EXT-option) or to an other pgm in the calling-stack

    Maybe you can try to use sndmsgbrk command in the CL program. This command send a message to the screen that submitted the job. Regards

    Thanks I used a break message in the end - just because it stays on the workstation so the user has to respond to clear it, and, I assume, will have at least had the chance to read it. So no excuses from the users! Thanks both

    Note that a break message might or might not be seen by users. Break messages may be allowed or disallowed, as the user chooses. Further, break messages won't provide a decent log to show that they were actually received. You're better off sending a *COMP completion message. If you absolutely positively must display a message (and from your description, you don't need to), call the QUILNGTX API. Tom
