Secure FTP from I5 Windows.

We have an I Series running V5R3. We need to be able to send a file from our I5 to a bank ftp server, securely. Right now the banks ftp is unsecured. What steps would we need to do on our end? I assume that since the bank is providing the ftp server, they would be responsible for making their end secure. Thanks.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The STRTCPFTP command has several parameters (PORT, SECCNN, DTAPROT) that initiate a secure connection from the client side. The FTP manual describes these parameters: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/index.jsp?topic=/rzaiq/rzaiqrzaiqclientsession.htm

Make sure you understand whether or not “the bank” understands what they’re talking about. There is ftps and there is sftp, and there are different kinds of both of those. Usually, “the bank” won’t know any more than you do. They will typically only know what they’ve been told about what they run and possibly won’t realize there are alternatives with names that sound very similar.

What that means is that you’ll want to find out what the technical specs are. From those it’ll be fairly easy to determine which alternative you’ll want to use; possibly even what you’ll need to install.

I am quite sure the bank can handle secure FTP so the easiest way would be for you to just connect securely using SSL, which is known as FTPS. Go to the V5R3 inforcenter here at the address below and search for "Scenario: Secure FTP with SSL" which is a very thorough guide on how to set this up. http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/index.jsp Best of luck.
