Answer Wiki:
The Secret Service’s original mandate in 1865 was to investigate counterfeit currency. In addition to protecting the President and his family, the Secret Service is responsible for investigating crimes that involve financial institution fraud, computer and telecommunications fraud, false identification documents, access device fraud, advance fee fraud, electronic funds transfers and money laundering. http://www.secretservice.gov/history.shtml
