I&#039;m not surprised that you got problems with GRUB/external drive; first of all, is your BIOS capable to boot from external (USB?) devices? If not, you should prepare a boot disk (CD, to be sure that all necessary software fits on it) which will load kernel + necessary modules for usb mass storage and will continue loading the system from (already available) external drive...

As about the problems building the kernel, please be more specific.
