 Scientific Linux CERN 4.3 Kernel download and GRU Boot
I am trying to download the Scientific Linux 4.3 CERN and to install it on the external drive. All 4 CDs are created and validated, but I am having problemes with creating of the kernel and booting of the GRUB Please help it impacts a very important for me research project Thank you very much, Semyon

I would suggest that if you are not very familiar with Linux that your first install should be done using a distro that is more user friendly, such as Fedora: ftp://zeniiia.linux.org.uk/pub/distributions/fedora/linux/core/5/i386//iso/

the scientific linux CERN 4.xx is build against a RedHat Enterprise 4 distribution and I recommend to get the documentation for external disk installation from the RedHad web site

Hi,

I’m not surprised that you got problems with GRUB/external drive; first of all, is your BIOS capable to boot from external (USB?) devices? If not, you should prepare a boot disk (CD, to be sure that all necessary software fits on it) which will load kernel + necessary modules for usb mass storage and will continue loading the system from (already available) external drive…

As about the problems building the kernel, please be more specific.
