Scaling Amazon Web Services against RDS

Any recommendations for scaling multiple application server instances in Amazon Web Services against Amazon's Relational Database Service?
For example, if you had multiple tomcat instances running, should
they each also have a slave that talks to the RDS master? Or let them
all connect to RDS?
