You Problem could be related to Spyware or a Trojan.
I’d Use one or More SPyware removal tools.
Such as Hijackthis and Giant AntiSpy, which is now owned by MS.

Several Spyware programs affect the View Source function of IE..

You can also have the cached files deleted automatically when you shut down your browser:

Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/

Scroll down to Security, and check the box that says Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

Glad to see you resolved your problem by clearing the cache. Large caches taht MS is in favor of, it seems, cause a multitude of problems. I suggest to all that they set their cache in their IE to 10 MB. That is more than enough to cache your recent browsing, and a full cache then does not cause any strange and unusual problems.

You should do this even if you do not use IE as your main browser, because IE is so intergrated into the OS, and used for so many functions, that a large cache can also cause problems.

You can save the file to the desktop and then open it with your graphics program, paint shop pro or whatever you use. Then you can either esport it as a jpeg or gif, or save file as. Hope this helps

Netscape has just come out with Version 8 which uses both the Firefox engine and the IE engine but with greater security. I am trying it out now. One nice feature is the ability to change the rendering engine on the fly so you don’t have to close one browser and open another and paste the url into the new browser, etc.

I would like to thank everyone who took the time and replied.

The fix for me came from PTidwell.

Even though I am not using IE, I recently moved to an IE add-on called Maxthon. Tab browser using the IE engine.

I simply cleared my cache – Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files. This took about five minutes or more. I had not done it in more than 8 months.

There was also a reply asking about the ability to view source. Yes, I also could not view my source files on the net. Which is one of the reasons I started looking for another browser.

Maxthon works OK, however, it is built on the IE engine. Same security and MS issues.

When Firefox is better able to view and process php and style sheets I will move off IE.

Unless someone has another suggestion for browsers.

I am also experiencing this with IE6 along with a problem that I cannot view source code in IE. (If I have a html document on my hard drive, I can view the source but none on any other location – saving a picture only gives the option of .bmp regardless of whether the page is local or on a web server). These two issues are reported to be connected. Are you able to view source in IE or is that also not functioning for you? I have tried all the suggested solutions (remove shortcuts to Word and/or WordPad and/or Notebook from the desktop and shortcut bar; clear the cache; delete temporary internet files) and haven’t been able to resolve this problem. I have looked at a number of security and internet settings but nothing seems to help. I hope you find a resolution to your problem and that it will also fix my problem with view source.

This MS article suggests clearing your internet temp files as mentioned, and also to delete unknown and damaged downloaded files.

I apologize for the incomplete information.

I am using both IE and Maxthon (IE Add-on browser) on XP Professional. Same results on every website.

Here is a simple example of gif files that will only let me save as a bmp.

I don’t what OS, browser and settings you are using but I use both Win-IE and Linux-Firefox and find that the file type depends on the original type. Usually its gif or jpg and saves in that format. I don’t think anybody uses bmp on the web. So please check the same website on another machine with same OS/Browser. You can also mail me the URL.
