I am running an i5 with v5r4. I am trying to same a given folder using SAVDLO *all FLR('QDLS/TempFlr') but it keeps telling me the folder is not specified correctly or not found. I can use WRKLNK and get to it just fine. Suggestions?

Software/Hardware used:
IBM i5 running v5r4

WRKLNK isn’t really appropriate for folders and documents. WRKLNK should be used by you for directories and streamfiles just to force yourself to keep the distinction in mind.

To start, there is almost certainly no “folder” named ‘QDLS’ on your system. What you probably see is the name of the /QDLS file system which contains folders within it. In this case, the “folder” would probably be TEMPFLR.

Use the WRKFLR command if you have to work in folders. Even better, never use SAVDLO to begin with. Avoid DLOs entirely. Never use commands directly related to DLOs such as CPYTOPCD.

Stay in more conventional directories in the /root file system and ignore /QDLS. There are extra steps necessary for /QDLS work, and the file system is more or less obsolete. It’s close to unfortunate that it continues to be installed by default.

Rather than SAVDLO, other commands such as SAV are more useful and apply to almost everything in any file system.

Tom...we process SAVDLO and SAV as part of our daily back up procedure. I have had instances when I have had to restore documents, which I have completed via the DLO save. My question is, why would I not save this seperately? Option 21 saves these seperately and Option 21 restore will prompt for seperate restores. TIA.

My question is, why would I not save this seperately? For me, it would be because I moved (copied) them out of folders and into more modern directories in the /root file system. Then SAVDLO no longer has a point since the entire /QDLS file system is no longer used. But that's a stand that is admittedly idealistic. I realize that existing programs and procedures aren't changed overnight. But then, IBM has been making it clear with their announcements, withdrawals and cessation of enhancements for maybe 15 years that /QDLS is being deprecated. At some potentially near-future time, it won't work any more. It might be too late to do the conversion when that time arrives. It can't be done all at once, but it is prudent to have conversions underway. Tom
