Probably because the manufacturer's are selling them through the distribution channels at wholesale prices which allows the retailer to set whatever price they want. If you go straight to the manufacturer (assuming you even can) they're going to give you the "suggested retail price" which is usually higher.

You can also try looking for bulk/refurb deals through places like Tiger Direct and NCIX. They often get a mass of drives and sell them cheap, just to get them out of their warehouse (and sometimes as a loss-leader for other sales).
