SAS memory allocation

SAS

Dear All,

It might be a profane question, but causes a lot of frustration to me:

Why does my PC with 1 GB RAM runs out of memory when I declare an array of - let's say - 1million elemenets? If I'm not wrong, SAS represents every number on 8 B, which implies that 1 MB RAM should be enough.

I would appreciate any comments on this.

Thanks
