SAP XI Capabilities, while implementing for a Retail Giant in US
I am working on an EAI project for a major Retailer in US. They have the option of going for SAP XI as a middleware. However, while evaluating the middleware options, our architects argue that SAP XI doesn’t have the messaging capabilities. As part of a typical retails solution, the middleware should play an important role in transforming and transporting the data between the corporate systems and store systems. A retailer might have over 1000 stores across the country/countries. The middleware should have the capability in transporting a single message, to all the 1000 stores.
In connection to the above business requirement, I have the below questions to be clarified:
- Does XI has the queuing capabilities?
- How can we measure XI's queuing capabilities in comparison with MQ?
- Can it connect to multiple source and target systems of different technologies?
- Can XI route a single source message to multiple destinations, say over 1000

- Does XI has the queuing capabilities?
Ans: Yes, SAP has queueing facility. There are transactions SMQ1 and SMQ2 to monitor inbound and outbound queues. You can also queueing facility via JMS adapter in the sender side.
- How can we measure XI's queuing capabilities in comparison with MQ?
Ans: SAP had queueing facility since long time.SAP has a well developed queueing architecture.
- Can it connect to multiple source and target systems of different technologies?
Ans: Ofcourse it can. You have to use different adapters for each technology or you can use a webservice.
- Can XI route a single source message to multiple destinations, say over 1000
Ans: Yes, it can. Howeer you have to make sure that the XI server has enough RAM to handle that much load.
