SAP User Menu & Portals

We are currently on SAP version 4.6c, and intend to install support packs up to number 48 to get relatively current. We also plan to begin utilizing Portals. With that in mind, we need to begin assigning users to roles instead or profiles to users. I need to know if: 1) There is any known problems with continuing to use the SAP Standard Menu instead of using User Menus based on the menus present in the roles users are assigned? 2) Must we use User Menus and not the SAP Menu if we intend to use Portals?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Firstly, user roles in the Portal and user roles in R/3 are two entirely different things, and so are the role menus. Theoretically you don’t need to be using roles in R/3 4.6c to be able to start using the portal.

When a role is built in the Portal it has it’s own menu (independant of the R/3 menu) and as long as the user has the appropriate authorisations in the backend R/3 system they will be able to execute the portal transactions. This applies regardless of how the user got the backend authorisations – e.g. via an R/3 role or the older style of auth profile.

Having said that, using roles in 4.6c is a much better concept than the old auth profiles……
