decide your OS with your current Knowledge in the team,
who will support the SAP and Storage prefences.
Oracle has currently an offer for EXADATA servers (SUN based) with HW OS and ORACLE-DB and SAP installed,
otherwise select an good and stable HW with an 7 by 24 Support.
then you may install Physical or Virtualized - Linux and SAP with MaxDB, then you will have the best ROI.
Monitoring will be done by Solution Manger which required to install and run an SAP Landscape at customer side.

Here is my 2 cents. I have been on the AS/400 since it's inception in the late 80's. I have also been a SAP Basis administrator for 11 years on the AS/400. I wouldn't consider anything else to run SAP on,,,why?, because the 400 is one of the most stable platforms out there. It is such a shame that IBM didn't spend more time and money on promoting it. I have been involved with AIX, Windows, Mainframe, and all those other platforms that people have been talked into running SAP on, and still love the 400.
But, if you ask 6 people their opinion, you probably will get 6 different opinions.
By the way, if you decide to go to the iSeries, I'd be happy to help you out or answer any questions.

Cheers,
Michael

First, I agree with Tom.
Second, why do not ask SAP if you already decided to buy the most expensive solution?
