SAP – MM, Planning Cycle in MRP
SAP
In the material master we currently use a planning calendar in conjunction with a period-planning lot-size to plan for procurement. This does not help us indicate a planning/ordering date, only a delivery date. Can I use the planning cycle to tip-off ATP to what our ordering deadline is? If so what configuration is necessary? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I need a time-phased planning lot-size to make this work? Regards.

Answer Wiki:
You can use the planned delivery time field, updated to the number of days it takes to order / receive a material from a vendor. If you have multiple vendors use the average number of days.

This will not work for us, consider this example:

If a purchase order for material A is placed on Friday and delivered the next Friday, that is a lead time of 7 days. But if I create a sales order on Tuesday, I can’t get the material in 7 days, the material won’t even have a purchase order placed until Friday.

I’ve heard of this to be called the “leap-frog” effect. I know that the solution involves time-phased planning, and utilizing the planning cycle, but I just can’t get it to work.
