You should start with attending one of the ABAP training programs available. After that, look at working as a contractor, intern or fresher for a company or consulting house. Certification is only viewed as a starting point for inclusion/exclusion as a considered candidate.
You will need to either gain wide experience in either development from scratch or maintenance work before you develop a portfolio of credible experience to get a really good position.
Becoming focused on a particular area like MM, FICO or the like gains you an opportunity to get involved in specific industries or segments.
You’ll be expected to learn about not just the functions of the coding but also the structures of tables etc.
Reporting and API development is a big area that still requires ABAP development.
