		<description><![CDATA[The SAP system is a tool kit, therefore you need to understand how to create value with the tool-kit provided for the shipping company. I worked on some 3PL projects where core business is simple; &#039;provide a serve&#039; by exploiting your resources; resources such as ship&#039;s capacity and   pipelines. Ideally you will need to implement financial/controlling mgt with profitability analysis (very critical), then consider plant maintenance, materials management (procurement, management of parts and storage, stock ect..) , service management as well as sales order plus billing. These are baseline requirements.
Then you can start getting sexy, this means going to next level with:
1 BI, a good business intelligence system
2 Portal, to provide some self service solution internally as well as to your customer 
3 GTS, Global Trade System for the management of all that is needed around shipments, export , import, duties, ect...
4  APO for planning and scheduling your resources. Your core business is selling capacity, therefore you need a tool to manage this efficiently

I would like to be more specific. By shipping company I mean a company involved in transporting things like crude oil, natural gas and off shore vessels based on the requirements of charterer. Such companies own vessels which move around from oe port ot another port. This imvolves transportation of oil and gas. Off shore vessels are used by oil exploration comapnies. Any examples of similar comapnies using SAP.

I do understand that cost in case of oracle increases. However apart from cost are there any other issues which impact the furture working of the product. We have few inhouse softwares like payroll, invoicing software (used to raise invoices and book expenses) and ship maintenenace software (similar to plant mainteneace software). These will have to be interfaced with SAP.

How does the choice of database affect such integrations? Which is better?]]></description>
