 sap classification – characteristic values

i have a characteristic with multiple values which can be assigned to several different classes. i only want the values pertinent to the class to be displayed for that class. this characteristic is not inherited top down from a hierarchy. how can i limit the characteristic values based on the class to which the characteristic is assigned?
