SAP Career Guidance - SAP ABAP(Technical) or SAP SD(Functional)?

Hi,

I wish to make my career in SAP and I am quite confused after speaking to some SAP consultants and doing my own research. After all the research I've come to the conclusion that I can either go for SAP ABAP or SAP SD. Now, I am not quite sure which one I should go for. As I am an MSc in IT and BSc in IT. I've got 1.7 years of work experience in Sales and Business Development and the rest 3 years in Technical Support and IT support.

The trouble is if I go for SAP SD (Functional side) I will find it hard to get a job or a break as there are enough Functional consultants in India and globally. So, the companies will not prefer me as a fresher as I do not have much Domain experience. Also, that is what the currently working Functional Consultants in SAP SD told me that it will be difficult for me to get a break or a job.

Now, one SAP ABAP consultant has advised me to go for ABAP (although I do not have prior experience in programming) but I do posses the basic programming logic. He and other SAP consultants have mentioned if go for ABAP it will be easier for me to get a job as a fresher as compared to SAP SD. Also, he mentioned that after a year or two of programming in SAP ABAP I can switch to the functional side SAP SD or any other functional module.


So, please advise which module should I go for SAP ABAP (Technical) or SAP SD (Functional)? Also, functional people supersede Technical people in SAP in terms of salary and growth. So, please tell me which according to you will be the right module or line I should choose.
