Zoning in the fabric is typically done to allow specific devices access to specific ports on the storage.

For example Server 1, Port 1 will have access to Port3 and 7 on the SAN. This is how the fabric knows that the servers have access to which ports to ensure that the server is talking to the correct number of storage ports to ensure load balancing.
