SAN Replacement Cycle 3 vs. 5 years
For us, our SAN is a capital purchase and our capital budget is on a five year cycle. However, EMC is on a three year replacement cycle. This causes us budgeting problems. What replacement cycle does your SAN vendor promote?

Answer Wiki:
They pretty much all work off a 3 year maintenance plan. However there are EMC SANs in use today that are 10-15 years old. You just need to contract with Uni-Sys or another company to handle the maintenance for the extra two years. --- Not quite sure I understand. Are they refusing to support their gear for the extra 2 years? We have a bunch of stuff thats going on for 6-7 years now, and is still not planned to be replaced. Yes, we pay more for maintenance, but thats a cost we absorb.

No they don’t refuse to support it, they just make you pay through the nose. Going through a third party is usually much cheaper for the extended maintenance time period.
