So you are not experienced...but hired as a SF developer? Maybe start by getting training. If you are new, you need to know how to administer (security roles and profiles, etc. are important as you move forward.) The 401 class is the declaritive development class (the point and click applicaiton building,) and the 50x are the apex, visualforce, etc. classes. There are several paths to take in this field from implementation, to admin, to developer.
Generally I find that people are looking for about 3+ years experience in the field, and a lot ask for a certification....but certs to me just mean you know how to take a test.
Perm positions seem to be hard to come by, but there seem to be a lot of contracting positions.
