Run two antivirus software at the same time

My father always told me not to have two antivirus software on the same machine (working at the same time). And I just started it to notice it more often because Windows Defender always is disabled when it detects my other free software. Why can't both run at the same time? Is there a real reason behind this?

You can run multiple AV programs just not in “real time” mode. The reason is a performance hit and they may conflict with each other. One may start a clean up if some thing found an not be able to do a clean removal if the other starts their clean up for the same issue during this process.  Running a second AV to scan for problems can be beneficial as they are only as good as their database of know issues is. Some may be updated more frequently.  I run MWAV and Malwarebytes weekly on all my systems.

Basically a good anti-virus works for delete/scan viruses and clean the systems for smooth operation. Not only that, it also provides a strong security or prevent the system from viruses. So, if you install more than one, it may slow down the system while so many processes are running for antivirus system. It is better to install one and a good antivirus with proper configurations.

Moreover, you can ask for good anti virus, which can be installed with minimal set of instructions according to need of your system. However, it is not possible to know prior that, how many services can run after installation. At very first time, it is better to install anti virus by an expert (vendor's representative) that can help to determine the best configuration at the time of installation.

There's too much of a performance hit. That said, in Windows 10, Windows Defender can run alongside another anti-malware product as long as Defender is enabled. I have found that to be a good combination because Defender definitely finds things that my other product does not.
