Q:
RPG vs Java vs Others

Hi,

With the possibilities of using all sorts of C and Java type functions now available in RPG and bearing in mind that (in my experience) Java is difficult to tune to perform reasonably on the i-Series is there any benefit for an RPG programmer to learn Java?

Or would some other language be a better option? What other languages do we have available for i-series these days?

Regards,

Martin Gilbert.

Martin;

I struggle with the same question - I have noticed MORE Java than RPG positions on iSeries lately. I recently purchased Java for RPG Programmer sfrom MCPress, but have not dug into it yet. They have many books on sale right now.

Our shop has 6 RPG programmers and 3 Java programmers.

Another one I’ve been hearing about is PHP - it’s said to be growing in usage on the i. I don’t know much about it (yet?), but I think it’s an open source language, and its syntax looks a lot like C and Java.

Those that know both Java and RPG are rare. They were “untouchable” in my prior shop. The Java classes I took taught me that I should stay with RPG as long as I can - so much more tedious to code (yes, we wrote code rather than just use some code generator) Java.
We’re planning to try PHP soon (current CGI programs need help from VB and/or JavaScript).
