		<description><![CDATA[Tom, thanks for those ideas.  i&#039;ll investigate both.  fyi, the particular device i&#039;m working with is a National Instruments NI USB-2008 data collection device, which will be attached to a plc on our production floor.  the plc sends various data streams to this collection device to signal the occurrence of various events on the machine.

		<description><![CDATA[I can imagine a USB device that included programming that acted as a proxy server. The proxy would install/activate when the device was activated on the PC. Communication with the proxy could be via sockets.

However, the only reasonable source of information on whether such a function was included with the device and on how to make use of it would be the vendor of the device.

I also can imagine that a USB drive might be presented to the Windows network as a shared directory. That could allow a RPG program to communicate through the usual /QNTC file system.
