 Routing confusion
I am confused about routing I know Cisco routers are capable of routing different NWs if it is WAN or LAN. Also there are lot of other routers available in the market such as d-link 525 .Netgear, Astaro, Pfsense,Linksys sub-routers. What is the difference between the routing mechanism they use? Also what about NAT role in these routers? Thanks

Answer Wiki:
Some vendors, like Cisco, have proprietary routing protocols that don't "play well with others" and don't meet routing standards for interoperability. Other vendors use standard routing protocols. This article on routing protocols might help you better understand the various routing protocols and their differences/similarities. Don't misunderstand me, Cisco does use standard routing protocols, but like Microsoft, they "embrace and extend" the protocols to "make them work better". There's a lot of information on other questions here about NAT or at SearchEnterpriseWAN that can help you also understand this technology. There is a lot to consider when implementing NAT. These resources will help you. In the IT trenches? So am I - read my IT-Trenches blog

By and large, routing is routing – hence the protocols. If various routers all speak the same language then it doesn’t matter who made them.

Agreed – as long as the router suports the protocols you need, any of them are fine. That just leaves you with the decision of how much you want to invest in your network gear..
