> rollover cable: What would happen if pin 3 on the left cable end were attached to pin 3 as with a straight-thru cable?
with a rollover cable the pins are exact opposite on the other end, pin1 at one end is pin8 at the other. these cables are typically used to hook a computer to the console port of switches. see this diagram:

if you make pin3, (Tx) straight thru that would be basically switching pins 3, (Tx) and 6 (Rx), white/green and green. This switch would make the rollover cable stop working since the transmit on one end is sending to the transmit on the other instead of the receive on the other.

In other words, the cable will not work correctly.
