There has been some recent comparisons for TCO. I don't know if you could find an ROI for going to Exchange as a development platform as it is mostly messaging with some ability to customize.

Actually, what you need to do is determine your requirements, then compare the value of recreating your 6.5.4 apps and mail environment in an Exchange/Outlook 2007 with WSS 3.0 environment compared to upgrading to Lotus Domino 8.5.1FP1. Then compare operating costs of running these two environments. No one knows your specific requirements, so no one can do this for you.
I am looking for what others have used to justify this. I have quotes for hardware,software,conversion costs and ongoing maintenance. We currently use Lotus and have downloaded the upgrades ( the only difference we see is the front end as all of our apps are lotus script and not web enabled. ). The biggest issue is finding programmers to code Lotus.
The upgrades in 8.5.x are quite large, and way beyond look and feel. Also, if none of your apps are web based, that is all Sharepoint is. Conversion will take a lot of work. Also, migration to Exchange/Outlook gets you nothing really.
I am available for application development work, and can likely find you several others. If you found a decent VB programmer, they could easily get up to speed on LotusScript (it is a Basic language, just like VB).
What Brooklynegg said still holds true to this conversation though. Why are you migrating? What is the intent? You obviously use Notes/Domino for more than email, so if you don’t have a true migration out of Domino for all aspects, you end up like so many that have tried, running both Notes/Domino and Exchange/SQL/IIS/Sharepoint. Costs will grow considerably.
Don’t believe MS reps when they tell you you can just convert them to .NET, it isn’t always that straight forward.

A lot of organizations are finding, as we did, that Lotus Domino does a whole boatload of things much more gracefully, reliably, and less expensively than Exchange/Sharepoint. We’re now running both platforms. Expect a significantly negative ROI.
