I’m not sure this is the right forum to answer your question. Robotics can easily require a 2-4 year learning curve involving electronics, mechanical engineering, physics, and so on. It sounds like the best references for you are going to be the college textbooks for the course you’re taking as well as for the undergraduate work you did that led to this field of study.

In fact, what i believe is before getting in to Robotics you should understand and be well-versed with electronics and most importantly Microcontrollers and Microprocessors. I don't know whether you are just eager to build a robot as a layman or you are a student doing Major in electrical or mechanical, but this is what you need. Robot is no kids play pal it is a seriously designed masterpiece. I remember doing a similar project in my early 3rd year of Engineering which involved a 'Converyer System' which is controlled by a microcontroller programming. It was a hell lot of study and a lot of fun as well. But before you proceed with your dream of building a robot go through electronics which i really feel will take some 2 years or may be a bit less, & then mechanics which is equally important and programming of all is soo important which cannot be explained in words. So keep your robot dream aside and proceed with these things first! Hope this helps.
