How can I convince a client that taking tapes home in the car is risky, even if they are encrpted?

Answer Wiki:
Gather together and show him photos of car wrecks that resulted in car fires. That should help! - Throw in a couple of house fire and flood pics to boot. Find one with the house floating downstream and the cow on the roof :-)

Ask the client if there is someone there 24/7/365 in case you need to restore something off a backup tape. Does everyone in the house know where they are located? Does their home owner’s insurance cover them in case of fire or theft?

Encrypting the tapes will ensure nobody else can see/use the data in them, but it will not protect them from being lost or damaged.

Also environmental conditions in the vehicle – moisture, heat, cold.

Those “secure” trucks and “secure” facilities loose tapes all the time. They can get into car wrecks just as easily as a car can.

Try to stole the backup tapes in his car, then the next day when he looks for his backup tape -its gone already. Then you show to him that you stole that and the data is already extracted. -Then he will convince for sure!
*Also tell your client to read the internet information about tape backup and security.

Any compliance standard you need to support? It would probably be in violation of your HIPPA, SAS, PCI, etc if tapes were not secured properly

How about the idea of his being potentialy personally responsible and possibly financialy liable for the value of lost data should something happen.
