 More robust options than Windows Retrospect data archiving
We are currently using Retrospect (windows version) to do both nightly backups and regular archiving of our production server. The routine archiving consists of an average of 200GB of DATA on several tapes in one catalog. We find that Retrospect may not be the most robust solution for such large data sets. However we are not interested in solutions that require us to pay per GB archived everytime we run an archive. Are there any other solutions more robust than Retrospect that is a one time purchase? We use a Windows based LTO-4 library. Thanks.

Answer Wiki:
There is a very robust solution for Tape Backup called CA ARCserve Backup r15. It does a good job and the licensing is something that might make it attractive in your case. ARCserve provides some critical techology free of cost as included in the backup base product license including Deduplication, Advanced Dashboard & SRM Reporting, Encryption, Infrastructure Visualization, Disk Staging, etc... Another good thing is that ARCserve Backup r16 Beta is already out and includes added functionality around Data Archieving. If you make an investing right now, you would be eligible for the free upgrade(under the terms of the maintanence contract) once the new version is out. There are free 30 day trials on the site in case you decide to have a look: http://bit.ly/gg43wt Link to the Beta Center to look at the advanced archieving functionality added into the next version: http://bit.ly/gZevEA In case of questions, let me know right here.

@KenHansen,

Can you be more specific regarding the issues you are having with retrospect?
I use it in some of my costumers and it handles very well.
In some cases I’m talking about the same average amount of data backed up everyday (~200GB). Most of them using Dell Powervault autoloadres.

We’re using Retrospect to backup 3-4 TB of data each week to a Dell LTO-4 library. It works great.
