Restoring data stored in qic file
I backed up some data on a Windows 98 computer several years ago. The computer is no longer in existence. I now run Windows XP, and need to retrieve the data in the qic files. How can I do this?

Software/Hardware used:
Windows XP

Answer Wiki:
I did quite a bit of research on restoring Windows 98 .qic files on Windows XP, and sadly the only utility that seems to still be around that might work is called MSQIC.EXE which can be researched further and downloaded from here - http://www.fpns.net/willy/msbackup.htm#DWLD. There used to be third-party backup software from companies like Roxio and Sonic that could read .qic files, but they have since dropped this feature. Another approach would be to ask family/friends if they still have a Windows 98 machine lying around (I know that I do), and have them restore the files and copy them to a CD or thumb drive for you. I hope that this information helps.

If possible try to install a copy of wind’98 onto a separate partition on ur HDD. This will make the comp a dual boot & enables to boot into wind’98 and XP. But remember, 98 must be installed on the first partition, i.e., drive C: & XP installed on the second partition. If u feel this trick now is not possible, then try another trick….
From any 98 comp, u can copy they file called ” msbackup” & 2 folders like ’system’ and ‘reports’ which can find here: c:program filesaccessoriesbackup in a pen / flash drive / a CD. Now transfer all the file / folders on ur XP comp (any alternate location, if transfer to system folder then keep them under c:program filesaccessoriesbackup and don’t paste the folders rather only contents of the said two folders). Now simply, right click on the .exe file and go to ‘properties’. On next box, click on ‘compatibility’ tab and then mark a tick in the box next to the option ‘Run this program in compatibility…..98/ME’. and select the option like ‘windows 98/windows ME’ & press ok. From here u can run the msbackup (.exe) application. Now it is easily to access the .qic files from the backups. When finished (if this procedure will successful), u can wish to use from the use XP version of NTBackup.
