Q:
Restoring backup on second exchange server 2003
I have one exchange server 2003 and taking native backup for first information group. I wanted to check the back up whether it is OK or not. For this purpose I want to install a second exchange server 2003 to restoe the backup over it. How do I proceed to install? Should I install in the same domain? If I install it on a different domain then I need to build up active directory and DNS etc... please guide me the easiest way to check for this backup. Thank You, Baseer

All you need to do is restore a database to a recovery storage group on your first server. This does not merge the mail back into the acting storage group unless you tell it to do so for say a test mailbox and this will verify your data without having to build another server to accomplish this. Once you have restored to the recovery storage group if you can mount it and view the available mailboxes then you know it is good. Test merging back one mailbox if you like as well. Hopefully you have a test mailbox you can use in this scenario. Recovery Storage groups are a great tool introduced in Exchange 2003!
