Q:
Restore a Single Email Message from 2+ years!
We have a legal request to restore an deleted email message from 2006. The user is still on the network currently, and I have looked in her mailbox, scanned for possbile .pst and archive files to no avail. The last administrator used NT Backup and I found a backup from 2005 that I would like to restore. What is the easiest way to do this. We are running Exchange 2003 Standard. Can I just restore one mailbox? Must I stand up another server to restore to? Please assist, thanks!

I would "restore" this backup not to original location, anywhere else on the network. then I would look into purchasing a product called Ontrack Power Controls which would be able to extract straight from an Exchange database file (EDB).

In exchange 2003 you can restore the database to a recovery storage group on the existing exchange server and then use exmerge to extract the mailbox you want from that database to a pst file. The recovery Storage group is separate from the existing storage group and restoring using that method will not cost you any additional money for another program. It is a fairly simple process.

I’m not sure what you are attempting to do is actually beneficial:

Why would backing up to a 2005 version help solve a problem with a 2006?

What I mean is, something earlier than the date of the e-mail cannot contain the email.
