 Responsibilities of a product marketer
My boss has asked me to write some technical papers, but I don't feel I'm confident in my technical writing skills. However I don't want to go back to him and say that, in case that is a typical requirement of a product marketer.

Should an IT marketer be able to write whitepapers and data sheets, or should that be done by a technical writer?

Well, how else are technical writer's are born?  If you have any savvy at all in the technical field, and you probably do since you say that you are a technical marketer, than you should be able to do a white paper with no problem.  Ok, maybe a little problem at first, but, after you start doing it a few times and you get the way in how things are written, then you will have no problem there.  In college, I had to take a technical writing course and I was going for a degree in IA.  Now, I could see that and yet, I could not, but, it helps on a resume, especially if they are published...
