I have purchased Acronis Disk Director and am intending on resizing the server system partition. I am going to do a full DR on the server before proceeding, but am very wary to whether there are any other things that I need to look out for. Have any of you used this product and have any wise words of wisdom before I proceed at the weekend? Thanks in advance.

I haven’t used disk director but their true image disk imaging prodcut is great. I would download the trial of TI Server and backup the server to an image file, then expand the disk boot partition. If the server cooks, you can restore the partition.

Some day, after over 10 years of NTFS, MS will wake up and update their FS to include partition resizing and there will be much rejoicing…

About a year ago I used it to expand the system partition on a Dell PowerEdge 2650 (MS Winodws 2000/SQL Server 2000). It had (unfortunately) been configured with a single RAID 5 array. I added an additional drive to the array. The Dell utilities expanded the array, but the partition didn't expand. Dell, following MS's brilliant recommendation, indicated that I need to backup/reinstall/restore to get the additional capacity. I really couldn't afford the down time, so I looked for an alternate solution. I used Disk Director, on a weekend to minimze the disk activity on the server and it expanded the partition just fine. I would try the demo just to make sure you don't run into something strange, but as long as you're using fairly common hardware you should be OK. To turn the demo into a working version you just need to install the s/n that you get after purchiase so you don't need to uninstall the demo and reinstall. I originally started investigating Symantec (old ServerMagic product) but they've 'enhanced' it and it was near $1K (US). Disk Director was

So the resizing of the partition was a success. All in all it was completed within 45 mins. I even did it remotely over our VPN. So anyone needing to look at a good disk management software would be advised to look at Acronis Disk Director. Phew. Now to apply Exchange 2003 SP2. Yikes!!
