Hi, I am new to AS400 Admin. And one of the AS400 box has high ASP utilization. The Disk space report shows the user libraries and user directories occupy maximum space. Can anyone please elaborate the steps I need to perform inorder to reduce the ASP utilization of the system.Specifically for purging by using RCLSTG or RGZPFM.

You must have free space equal to the space your of any file you are going to rgzpfm because it makes a copy. I woud go for the low hanging fruit like GO CLEANUP and make sure your options look something like this:

Then make sure any application journals receivers are being deleted in a timely manner.
Next you should have an operator or a program that cleans up spooled files from outqueues at some time period agreed to by the businness. Joblogs are often a space problem and on older systems affects the number of jobs in system setting.

Record/data purges is the job of applicatiion support. But when they do clean up you can do DSPFD to an outfile and query it, again outputting to an outfile the files with large number or % of deleted records then submit a job that loops the list and submits rgzpfm for the file. You better make sure this is at a time when you can lock the files for however long it takes.

RCLSTG has to be done in a restricted state and can take a very long time. That is usually the last resort.

    The Disk space report shows the user libraries and user directories occupy maximum space. It's not clear what is meant by "maximum space" in that sentence. Please clarify. DanD has given very good advice. However, we should ensure that it addresses your problem. You show V5R4 as a tag on your question, so we know you have a fairly recent system and operating system. On many newer systems, the user libraries might be in fair shape. It's possible that your issue involves... user directories. Please describe the "maximum space" item so we can know if you also need some discussion of directories. Tom

    Hi Tom, The disk space report shows that the user libraries occupy 74% of disk and user directories occupy 6% of the disk. other things linke the folders and documents , QSYS, Other IBm libraries etc occupy very little % of disk compared to user libraries and directories.

    It looks like you are running at about 80% of disk which is optimal for the iSeries. The other 20% is usually needed to help make the OS run as fast as possible with the paging it does to accomodate all the tasks that this machine handles. To add to DanD's answer you should then take the library list to the application staff and see if there are any of there application files that can either be purged to reduce disk space to reorganized with the RGZPFM command. This command is usually used in restricted mode or at least late at night when the system is very slow. There are so many places to look for unneeded objects but I find that once I have taken the time to make sure my house is in order and that we do not have excessive journal receivers, spooled files or other things then you need to get the application people envolved and if they also have a test environment on the same machine as production then you will have to get management approval to get the application staff to clean up their programming libraries or the test environment. The application staff will push back hard as it is usually more costly for the application staff to spend their time cleaning up then to just add more disk and they do not want to spend their time on these mundane tasks. This becomes a management issue so plan your battle of adding more disk or getting the application staff to clean up data and programs no longer needed. It will take a lot of time to get this done and the most important part of this exercise is keeping it cleaned up on a regular basis. Lovemyi

    There is so many ways of cleaning up a system it cannot be quickly listed. One area is to compress objects on the system. The command CPROBJ will downsize programs and data files etc. and save you space BUT be careful that you do not affect an object being used. Try the command out on a small library. Then change the job that you will submit the command with to a default wait time of 1 second and then submit the command. It is a bit tricky but it might clean up a lot of disk space. Image catalogue entries would be a second area to look at. This could be relatively quick or you might find that the complete image catalogue entries are duplicated on disk. The complete CD/DVD to load in the latest O.S. and PTF's may sit on disk (in fact you might have multiple PTF levels on disk). Save files of PTF's would be another area as well. Do not be surprised if you find save files for older operating system levels for PTF's ordered from IBM. System history files (QHST*) from years ago that never got purged off the system. You could even find system history files from the future (system date was changed to a forward date and a new system history file was created). Journal receivers (*JRNRCV) would be another place to look on the system (be careful you do not delete receivers that are unattached but still required). Cleaning up data files is a separate issue and depends on how the system is written and the structure of data files (tables) both physical and logical files.

    ...user libraries occupy 74% of disk... That's a very useful number for us. It indicates that 'standard' cleanup has the best chance of recovering space that is currently used unnecessarily (if significant cleanup is possible). Next, try this command:
    PRTDSKINF RPTTYPE(*LIB)
    The result should show libraries in descending order of size. Obviously, unless you have a very large number of old small libraries that no one needs, the libraries at/near the top of the list are your first candidates. You can then run a few commands like:
    PRTDSKINF RPTTYPE(*LIB) LIB( <big_lib> ) OBJ(*ALL)
    ...to list the objects in the "big libraries". The lists might show individual objects that are very large or large numbers of small objects. E.g., a couple database files might be consuming a large space -- you'd want to review those to see if the space is actively used or the space is merely left over from past deleted records, or perhaps the files have lots of temporary members that aren't being deleted after use. Or for small objects, maybe some function creates temporary user spaces with large initial allocations and doesn't delete them when finished. Or perhaps journal receivers are simply piling up. Basic cleanup steps were mentioned by DanD. A few more reports, with directed detail, will help you see where to focus effort. Keep in mind the possibility that you simply might need more DASD. Tom
