If I run check disk on the next system boot, I'd like to know if it found and fixed any problems. Does it generate a report, and where would I find it? Someone suggested the event log, but I may not know what I am looking for: a log, a report, a breif line item description?

In the event log. The name on the event will be: winlogon
this will be found in the system event log.

Event log is also possible to record the checkdisk execution of your computer system. However, the best thing you can do is to perform a regular checkdisk scan to avoid any future problem regarding your hard disk drive.
