I have used DBU and it is a great product. However, it has authority levels associated with it, which is a good thing, but if you cannot do file additions, you will still want to use dfu for that.

Another option you may wish to explore is WRKDBF <a href="http://www.wrkdbf.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.wrkdbf.com/</a> a freeware utility with similar functionality. It doesn’t have the multiple record capabilities and doesn’t display keys on related logical files like DBU from ProData Systems but it far exceeds DFU in efficiency and ease of use. I have used both and currently use WRKDBF because of it’s cost advantage.

Besides DBU there is a product called EZ-VIEW,which if I remember was from hawkeye. It’s been a while and I can’t remenber,(nor can I find a link for it, hmmm)
But there is also a freeware product called WRKDBF(www.wrkdbf.com), that works okay. It has some issues like occasionally it seems to just crash, for some stupid reason the author likes to show you the deleted records(you can turn them off with a function key, but why should I have to bother?), and a couple of other minor annoyances that don’t come to mind right now. But it offers reads, updates, and ADDS. You can get a record count, select to printer, select to file, etc.
It may not be the most robust, but it does have nice feature set and IT’S FREE!!!
can’t beat that, espicailly when the powers that be refuse to awknowledge the need for a good File browser, Editor.

I would also like to add my vote for the ?wrkdbf? product. I think it is a FANTASTIC iseries database tool. I have worked exclusively with system/38, AS/400 and iseries 400 for the past 20 years. I have been a consultant at a number of companies and I have used all of the other tools mentioned (Hawkeye, DFU, DBU and EZVIEW). Every time I move to a new client I recommend that they download the ?wrkdbf? freeware and give it a try. It is handsdown the best DB tool around and it?s free!

There is also another program available. It is PFE or “Passport File Editor”. Very similar, to DBU. I have used both DBU and PFE and I honestly prefer PFE. I think it is easier to use than DBU. As for adding records to a file, that should always be done by a program, better control. You should NEVER give an end-user the power to change, add, or delete records from a file via DFU, DBU, or any other similar program. It brings up so many problems, that it just isn’t worth it. My experience with this is an order entry clerk placed an order for a client, went thru and did all the necessary functions like debiting inventory, crediting AR, etc., then client calls up to “order” more of the same item. Instead of adding an additional order to the system, they called someone in the IT department to “increase” via DBU or PFE the previous order. Well, it didn’t debit inventory, didn’t update AR, and it was our responsibility to spend the next eight hours (of unbillable time as we were a contractor) to track the problem down and fix.

EzView is offered by HelpSystems, <a href="http://www.helpsystems.com/products/easyview.html." rel="nofollow">http://www.helpsystems.com/products/easyview.html.</a>
FEU is offered by Applied Logic, <a href="http://www.alcsoftware.com/feu/moreinfo.php" rel="nofollow">http://www.alcsoftware.com/feu/moreinfo.php</a>
File Flash is offered by BCD,
<a href="http://www.bcdsoftware.com/pr-fileflash4.htm" rel="nofollow">http://www.bcdsoftware.com/pr-fileflash4.htm</a>
As mentioned in another post, WRKDBF is convenient because it is free and easy to port. I found it valuable as a consultant. These utilities should only be developing or debugging tools and should never be used as a user interface to an application unless they apply adequate editing and business rules.
