need to remotely connect and control Windows 7 desktops on our internal
domain. What software is necessary and what needs to be configure at the
firewall or router level?

You can use the native Windows 7 Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance features to do this quite easily. No changes need to be made to anything on the network.
Just have the user create a remote support request and send it to the help desk person helping them. The help desk person just clicks on the link in the email and the users desktop pops right up on their screen.
