Remote Desktop on VPN

Hi we have set up a VPN so our accountant and myself can connect to the office computers and work from a remote. I can connect to the office computer, I can then use the remote desktop to open the desktop on the office computer. A window of the exact desktop of the client shows up. However, i cannot do anything once there. The mouse does not function on the desktop, however i can close the desktop window with the mouse. Help please.

Hi there. What are you using as the remote client?
This might be an issue with your client, or the permissions you have set on the office pc’s which would determine what you could actually do remotely.
Check the permissions or perhaps try another client?
I personally use TightVNC. Fast, reliable and easy to use.

You must be a member of the Remote Desktop Users group on the local machine. Accessed via mmc or system properties.

SETUP! You don't specify what client you are running on the remote or the office desktop, you imply MS remote desktop. In any case, the problem is transfer of focus. You did not say if the keyboard worked, I presume not. The mouse not working in the window but able to close the window tells you the remote desktop never surrendered control. Check your setup and you will find a missing command or option to take control. Good luck.

In addition to the Remote Users (or Administrators) group membership), please note that WinXP has a security setting (sorry, but I'm on a W2K desktop as I write this, so cannot be exact in the description) accessible from the standard Computer Management MMC panel which allows/denies remote registry access. If set to "deny" or "off" you will not be able to control the machine. Be aware that setting this to "allow" opens a possible security hole...

Thanks, I have one other question. Our VPN is set up and our bookkeeper can take control of the client computer without any problems. I am only haveing problems taking control of the computer from my local office computer. So i need to make these changes on the client or the remote (local) computer system? all systems are running XP.
