I've been asked to administer an existing Windows2000 network consisting of one computer running Windows2000 Server and the other three running Windows2000 Professional. All have Service Pack 4.
I would like to be able to sometimes administer the server remotely from any one of the workstations rather than running back to the server. I know Windows 2000 has a remote administration functionality but I don't know how to invoke it.
I also have Laplink and Remote Administrator software available to use for remote access but I believe I would need to be able to run these as a service on the server. I do not want to leave the server in a logged in state even if it is locked.
Can someone advise me?

You can use Remote Administrator. It installs as a service, but you don't have to leave it in a logged in scenario. When you log out of RA it logs out the Windows user. I have personally stopped using RA and use the built in Remote Desktop provided by MS. You can find it in Start|Programs|Accessories. I think shadyj may have misunderstood your question.
On a 2000 server, you will need to install Terminal Services (Add/Remove Windows components) in administrative mode. This will all 2 administrative (administrator) connections. You then would download RDP from microsoft to each of your 2000 desktop computers http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx
If you want to remote manage from outside your network (ie from home) then you router would need to have port 3389 set to point TCP to your servers static IP address. XP has RDP installed by default, so if you have XP at home, you can enter the routers public (external) IP address, the router sees the request on port 3389 and send it to your server.
Just remember, set the Terminal Server in administrative mode else after 120 days it will no longer function.

Nothing misunderstood. RA can be used as a service and lets you log off the active user. You do not need to install Terminal Services to connect to a 2k box with RDP.
Make that TS is not needed for RA. The only time I use RA is when you need to take control of a users session without their permission.

Sorry, I miss understood you point on using the built in Remote Desktop. It is my understanding that RDP is not part of Windows 2000 but rather a download from Microsoft. The link you provided also confused me as it was a link for Windows 2003 and XP.
Could you elaborate on how you connect to a 2000 server with out TS installed? I know there are third party software, but it appears you are referring to something that I am not aware of that is native to 2000 Server.
Would you please elaborate on what program or service you mean by Remote Administrator? I am not aware of this in regards to Windows 2000; or is this a reference to Famatech?s RADMIN?
I have many customer?s I support that run Windows 2000 Server and 2000 desktop and I sure would like to know more about of your techniques.
