I have used client access for years. I had a linksys router to a westell modem model 6100. THEN Frontier came in and swapped the westell modem for a westell model 7500 which is a modem/router combo. It has been configured for port forwarding. However, it won't let me in from home. What changed and how do I fix ?
Software/Hardware used:

Is Frontier handling the service at the system site or at your home? What ports are being forwarded? Does a simple Windows telnet from your home to the system succeed?
Tom
Last time I looked at Frontier the ‘outside’ ip address of some of their routers was a 10.x.x.x which non route-able as it’s a private NOT public IP address. Make sure the outside IP addess that router is giving you is is public IP address.
Telnet from my home does NOT succeed. Frontier is handling the service at the system site. Port 23 is being forwarded and I am trying to come in non-secured. The address of the router itself is 192.168.1.1. The address of the connection says “routed bridge” with address 50.102.238.246. The address of the iSeries is 192.168.1.2
Telnet from my home does NOT succeed.
Basic telnet from a Windows command line should only use port 23, so that tells us something different than using the Client Access emulator. Client Access needs more than just port 23 to be open (or forwarded).
The address of the router itself is 192.168.1.1.
That address is useful only on the inside of your office network. For now, it can be ignored.
The address of the connection says “routed bridge” with address 50.102.238.246.
Where do you see that? Is that the address you tried to telnet to from your Windows command line at home?
Tom
When I get into the Modem/Router via 192.168.1.1 I see “Gateway Status” which lists
Broadband Connection: Connected
DSL Link: Connected
Speed: some speed
Connection Type: Routed Bridge
IP Address: 50.102.238.246
And Yes, I have tried to put that address into the Network properties to connect but that does not work. I currently do not have anything in the IP address when trying to connect from home. (thank you by th way for your help)
Yes, I have tried to put that address into the Network properties to connect but that does not work.
Yes, but did you try to telnet to that address from home? You shouldn’t need to enter that address in any “Properties” on your home PC.
That is, open a Windows command line. Type telnet, followed by the IP address, and press <Enter>. Don’t use Client Access; just run the Windows telnet command.
Do you reach the office system?
Tom
Ckidder, maybe you can enable some logging on the router. If you are trying to connect using the windows telnet client, to the router’s public ip address, and it fails, then the port forwarding is probably not working as expected, and reviewing some logs could help identify the problem.
BTW, you should not post real addresses on internet site’s, nor should you give details about your network configuration.
The port forwarding works.
Either you are doing something wrong when trying to connect, or there is something in your home’s network configuration that is preventing you from reaching the remote router.
…and it fails…
Unfortunately, it doesn’t. Not for me anyway.
That’s made it difficult to continue the discussion.

@Carlosdl:
I take it that you noticed, too.

Tom: Yep
Got it……….all is well……Thank you !!
