 Remore RS232 Control

Good Day All I wondered if anyone knows how to remotely access and control RS23 devices. I will give you my example. I have a PC which is attached to 2 RS232 devices. I would like to have some form of control of the devices attached to the PC from a remote location, like a PC in another room or from a web page that can be accessed via a PDA. Has anyone seen RS232 control via a web page? Or PDA remote RS232 control? Many thanks in advance. Jon Dean

Jon, Any application that gives you web-based control of the desktop PC should allow you to exercise control of the devices connected to it. A good example is a program called VNC (Virtual Network Connection). Here's a link: http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html If your OS is new enough, you can even do remote desktop with Windows. As a side note, there are devices that let you connect more RS-232 devices through a single USB port. I've got a couple in service right now, that let me connect 8 serial devices each. Hello Jon,
Try using a serial-to-ethernet converter. Basically, the converter makes the RS232 port available on the network with a unique IP address, just like any other network device (printer, PC, etc.) I have several RS232 devices on my network and am happy to recommend the following vendors: http://www.comtrol.com (Comtrol) and http://www.ni.com (National Instrument).

Hi Jon
you can connect via a precidia i pocket232 unit. If you look
up http://www.precidia.com.
I found this unit easy to configure and it sounds like what you need.
IF you are managing rs232 device over private network you only set ip address and gateway.
If you want to manage device over internet you will need a public ip address and mask or nat through firewall.
