Reinstall windows 98 can’t find cd rom drive

I have installed Windows 98 on an old laptop. It required a boot disk in order to boot from the cd rom drive. It installed okay but then when I had to restart the machine when it loaded it kept requesting the cd rom drive to load additional files/drivers but it couldn't find the cd rom drive. I was able to get into Windows by skipping these files and it doesn't have a cd rom listed. How can I tell it it has a cd rom? Thanks.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Your CD-ROM may require a seperate driver to be loaded.
It might be loading using a generatic one on either a bootable CD or bootdisk to load Windows 98, but require a driver for W98 once your OS is loaded. Upgrading to XP would probably solve this. but would cost you $ as well.

Look in the device manager and see if it detects the device and also verify it see’s it still in the Bios as the PC boots on the IDE cable.

Try checking out the laptops manufacturer website for drivers you are missing.

Boot from the floppy disk again, and note which of the CDROM drivers is used to initialize the drive. Then put that driver on the C: drive and in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
